Krispy Kreme Doughnut Pies

Cherry Donuts Krispy Kreme

I remember being in high school and Krispy Kreme doughnuts being incredibly popular. That is, until we learned that each doughnut contains the equivalent number of calories as a Big Mac. Seriously, what do they make them out of? Lard??

Flash forward to today and Krispy Kreme has introduced a brand new product: glazed fruit pies. As you might expect, they’re delicious (and humongous in size). They’re about the size of two or three chocolate bars and they contain 1/4 of your daily caloric intake. Um, yup that’s right, each one of these pies has almost 500 calories!! Which maybe shouldn’t have shocked us but it did seem a bit excessive for a pastry.

My husband said, and I quote, “they almost taste fresh, or at least they don’t taste like stale old pastries that you’d normally find in someone’s cupboard”. His comment might be lacking in eloquence, but he’s right. The makers of these pies have perfected the recipe so that they’re still soft and doughy all the time (props to Krispy Kreme).

Ian particularly liked warming them up in the microwave before eating them. He said it made them more “pie-like”. Personally, I didn’t them warmed up because the heat makes the icing on the outside hard. I was also a little grossed out when I found a cherry stem on the inside but Ian said this was just proof that the filling is made from real fruit (clearly he’s a fan). And to be fair, the packaging does claim that they’re “made with real fruit filling and other natural flavors”.

Overall,  we both agreed that the Krispy Kreme Pies were amazing. We aren’t pastry people but there’s no getting around the fact that they’re tasty. But I would be hesitant to eat them on the regular. I mean, obviously nobody should eat pie everyday, but these seemed especially unhealthy. I think it’d be nice to enjoy them as an occasionally treat. Kind of like how you might eat a giant slice of dark chocolate cake on your birthday or a third helping of stuffing at Thanksgiving. Fun to eat and indulge in…but only once in a while and afterwards you might need a nap.
