Six years ago, my friend Liz and I traveled around southeast Asia. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of going there, you’ll know that it’s not uncommon for tourists to jump on overnight buses to get from one city to the next. Sometimes these journeys feel epicly long but luckily, and perhaps to appease high maintenance tourists like myself, the buses make frequent stops at markets or convenient stands located next to the highways. It was at one of these markets that Liz and I developed a fondness for a game called ‘Mystery Candy’.
The rules are simple: buy any type of candy that you’ve never tasted before and dive in. Extra points if you can’t read the label so the flavour itself remains a true mystery.
Mystery Candy is fun, although arguably its a bit scary and a lot like eating those Harry Potter flavoured jelly beans – every bite is a real gamble.
Although these candies reminded me of our time in southeast Asia, in actuality, I think they’re made by a US company. They taste like Starburst with the same taffy-esque texture and colour. We absolutely loved them, especially the guava flavour which was unique and perfect.
Enjoy the sweet stuff,
